Jagjit Singh (1941 - 2011) was one of India's best singers of devotional songs. He met his future wife in 1967; they were married two years later. Though they performed as a duo, they were unable to record together until the middle of the '70s. Two years later, he met Chitra Singh in a studio. Singh, born Chitra Shome to a Bengali family, had had no formal training. When she met Jagjit Singh in 1967, she refused to sing an advertising jingle with him. She recalled in a interview, “I told the music director that his voice was heavy and that I wouldn’t be able to sing with him.” She took the microphone reluctantly.
