Should I have let the cd with the setup on it do an install of Mapsource? At this point, editing the registry doesn't sound so bad. On Windows 7 you can install free BaseCamp, which is some kind of replacement for Mapsource: Once you have BaseCamp running, then you can install latest Mapsource update: Last step would be to copy maps from old PC. So I have a 64s and I have downloaded the South Africa 2013 Pro topo as IMG. I load into USB and Basecamp sees it but it is restricted view. Also, I am unable to load this map onto the unit as basecamp says no unlocked files available. I have tried putting the IMG through through the gimgunlock newprotect but with no luck. Currently that task is done with an ancient HP Laptop running Windows XP. I am trying to eliminate any dependency on that old laptop by installing software on my newer Laptop, running Windows 7. Microsoft makes this difficult.

Just drag all the files from the CD to the program as described at the link I posted. This will convert the old map to Garmin's new 'gmap' format. You will need to install the new version of Mapsource to use this kind of map however. The gmap format does not rely on the Windows registry - a big improvement IMHO.

Drag the folder (or zip archive) with the files to the window of JaVaWa MapConverter; the program will determine whether the collection is useful and which map it is. In most cases JaVaWa MapConverter will be able to decide what the purpose of each of the files is, but sometimes it isn't clear which.img file contains the overview map. In that case you will need to pick the right one.

C: Garmin Topo5 or something like that might be a good place to create it. 9: Still in the split tab, Select Create 'files for Mapsource' 10: Tick; Compile preview map. 11: Check all info above is done then Select 'Split all'. 12: You will get a verbose dialog that opens up & shows the process, may take a while for large maps, when it is finished a Cmd prompt will open to say operation successful press any key to continue, (space bar will do) then space bar to close Cmd prompt. It is a major improvement and works perfectly with those older Topo maps. I have been using those old Topo maps since 1999 and often they have info and roads not shown on my newer 24K Topo.

And now to your second question. Never you must use GMAPTool and so. Use a sd card and create a garmin folder. Copy img inside and now run BaseCamp. BaseCamp read in automatical img files and you can work on PC with this map. Forgot MapSource - is to old and dont supported so much feature - use BaseCamp.
